The safety pin is my shastra..my ayudha
Privacy and personal space is luxury in a place I live. The following entry is happening when I am sandwiched between a sleeping lady who has fallen asleep by the time the bus reached Karundakad from New Bus Stand. Well I'm traveling from Kasaragod to Mangalore which is my weekend routine.
Yeah so, stuck between the sleeping lady who sways like one of those coconut trees during hurricane of Category 4 and a man who is stoic and has resemblance to Spock. The stoic figure does get agile once in a while when the conductor passes every now and then disturbing the assorted placement of people who have fit in the gaps available after all the seat have been occupied by more than the prescribed people. As I type on to my phone I get a vague idea of the stops we pass by thanks to all those loudspeakers screaming with full might outside the religious institutions. A Krishna Bhajane indicates it's Kumble Sri Gopalakrishna Devasthana and Hanuman chalisa is Arikady of course. It's also time for the evening baang and I can hear that so it's Uppala.
Amidst all this chaos, rush and all the people getting down and getting in, a hand moves. It's none other than the stoic figure's hands. Let's call him Spock but then I like Spock so let this guy be Spike. So Spike who was silent all this while has started moving. I've traveled enough in public transportation and I know the usual movement and one of those uneasiness when probably some chemical imbalance in the brains of the individual instigates such actions. Spike initially with weird elbow movements tries to touch the mound beneath the dupatta. All these stupid actions might require some kind of planning I'm sure. By the looks of it, it did seem like it. Anyways these are unsuccessful attempts because we women are very well equipped with counter moves. Especially the ones who use the public transportation on a regular basis. It's not that I am scared to yell or create a scene but then it's a nice day I spent with my family and I'm someone who relishes these small moments of life. So yelling at him would only make my day bitter. But then these creatures like Spike cannot be just ignored like that. They would take this for granted and repeat it again. Not that my preaching or creating a scene would not enlighten him and stop him from doing it again, but in spite of all that he can't be let loose. So now, what do I do? Now if I ask him to sit properly, he would either continue with his moves or stop for a while maybe and then resume. I did not want to create a scene because most of the times these offenders get away by saying, " travel in your own vehicle if you are all that uncomfortable" So I could think of only one thing that would help me. My all time rescuer who has held on to my saree pleats during the worst of days. A regular saree draper always has a few safety pins in her bag. So did I. I took out my Ayudha and waited like a predator to attack. I would either do it when I get down or when he gets down, whatever comes first. To my luck he had to descend before me. He got up and stood right next to me and waited till the bus slowed down to stop. And I waited with him for my turn. The bus stopped, people hurried to get down and so did he, and then the poke. I poked him so hard on his thigh, that I could almost sense the pin getting past the layers of clothes to touch his skin. He reacted but was in a hurry to get down. The bus moved and so did I. He saw my middle finger pointing at him and he realized the sharp pain was me. The reaction on his face was priceless and my reward for the action.
